Moscow Says It is First To Launch Large-scale Metro Facial ID Payment System (reuters.com) 19

Moscow's sprawling metro network on Friday launched a fare payment system using facial recognition technology at its more than 240 stations, an initiative the authorities said was the first of its kind in the world. From a report: Moscow, a city of 12.7 million, has one of the world's largest video-surveillance systems. It has used facial recognition technology to enforce COVID-19 quarantines, and protesters attending political rallies have also said police have used it to make preventive arrests and detentions. The authorities are now giving commuters the option to use facial recognition to pay their fare with a system called "Face Pay" at turnstiles equipped with cameras. "Moscow is the first city in the world where this system is operating on such a scale," Maxim Liksutov, head of the Russian capital's transport department, said in a statement.

  • for the rest of the world since, well ... the Czars. We should have taken care of the Russian problem somewhere between 1945 and 1949.

  • Amazing that an article on a topic like this wouldn't mention whether or not the system works with masks. Maybe they're not a big deal in Russia but at least where I live, I think masks are going to be a pretty common feature in our public transport system, with or without mandates.

Facial recognition tech can already account for masks with a high rate of success, so presumably that's a non-issue.
    • It does.

They are ahead of the world by 5+ years in real life face recog and image recognition. Remember FaceTime (and the craze and panic around it)? It did not appear out of nowhere. It is also nothing compared to their police video analysis tools. There used to be a demo on youtube on what SK tech dept is working on and some of it was amazing. They had fingerprinting of people's movement and ability to identify people despite thick layers of clothes just by the way they walk or move.

      It is also what is

You are either a complete fantasy land or you're a troll, if Navalny wasn't poisoned then why was he initially treated in a Russian hospital? No reason to read the rest of your post when you're this deluded. No doubt you think Putin is a great leader and not corrupt.

Super interesting, thanks for the comprehensive reply. I have had a few people complain that the face recognition on their phone unlock doesn't work & figured the software wasn't at that point yet.
