Brazil Court Suspends Telegram (barrons.com) 16

Brazilian court has ordered the nationwide suspension of the Telegram messaging app due to its parent company's failure to provide data on neo-Nazis operating on the platform, imposing a daily fine of approximately $198,000 until compliance is met. The action was taken as part of an investigation into neo-Nazi activity on social networks.

Agence France-Presse first reported the news.

This seems to always be the kind of line used to attack privacy in the name of security. First they make the compromise of first principles about going after the pedos, or nazi. But once the president is set the erosion is inevitable.

And reading the article it's all clearly the case here. Here is the evidence they're using to try and force a company to turn over user data:

    FTFA:
"The G1 news portal, citing police sources, reported the teenager had allegedly interacted with anti-Semitic groups on Telegram."

Telegram could, you know, stop hosting nazis. That's what Parler is for.

Well, yes and no. They asked for data on two specific channels that were found on the phone of that teen.

      https://www.nytimes.com/2023/0... [nytimes.com]

The authorities say the group chats were found on the phone of a teenager accused of committing two school shootings in November that left three people dead and another 13 injured. The police said they had identified Nazi content, violent videos, murder tutorials and bomb-manufacturing instructions shared in the groups that inspired the attacks.

Keep in mind that Brazil, like many other countries, this is nowhere near unusual a request. Also, like Germany, in Brazil freedom of speech / expression is not absolute. Heck if this was Germany Telegram would be in even more hot water as such content (anti-Semitic, Neo Nazi) is highly illegal and failure to moderate opens a company up to massive fines or worse. Technically this might even cross a line in the US. Stuff like this is why Parler crapped their pants and handed over the data on the communications of potential J6 terrorists, people who interacted with them, and location data, from the app.

    • Agreed. But notice they NEVER go after leftists, socialists, or communists. Even though all of the above are bad enough that people eventually elect someone like Pinochet, or worse, to try to clean things up.
      • Apeople eventually elect someone like Pinochet

Pinochet wasn't elected, he spearheaded a military coup d'état. In the 1988 plebiscite, the first time Chilenean people could possibly vote for Pinochet, he was rejected by 56% of the voters.

        • Strictly speaking that's correct. My mistake. But he had a great deal of support across a broad segment of the population. He would have had mine had he not himself abandoned rule of law by "disappearing" suspected communists, and their families and friends and associates, without trials. His intent was laudable. His means were not.

Also, much worse people than Pinochet have been elected in what were considered fair elections at least at the time. Slashdot's "lameness filter" is not allowing me to spec

Basically the countries that treat people even worse than the USA does. All want to replace the USA as world leader but very few look up to them with respect.

    • In all honesty, I really wonder if the creation of killer bees in Brazil back in the 1950s was some kind of experiment to make a biological weapon by escaped Nazis.

The timing of the whole thing and the location is very suspicious.

"We wanted to make something that is better at producing honey"- A rather lame cover story.

  • I remember stories about Iran and Russia suspending Telegram. Then, later on, I read stories about information being spread through those countries by Telegram users.
