An international crime gang which used malware to steal $100m from more than 40,000 victims has been dismantled. From a report: A complex police operation conducted investigations in the US, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The gang infected computers with GozNym malware, which captured online banking details to access bank accounts. The gang was put together from criminals who advertised their skills on online forums. The details of the operation were revealed at the headquarters of the European police agency Europol in The Hague. It said that the investigation was unprecedented, especially in terms of cross-border co-operation.

If you are going to use you skills to rob banks, then if you are smart, you can't brag about how smart you were to pull off such a heist.

Are you sure it's their only source of income? Maybe they just supplement their income? An additional 30k isn't bad! Also, what country are these people located in? If it's a global average it doesn't tell you much. If you're making 30k in India, where a lot of these "criminal hackers" are, you could be doing really well. Presumably many also aren't paying taxes on this income.

Maybe they have a criminal past that will prevent their getting a job. Maybe they are racially or socially disadvantaged in their job hunt. They're going to have to pay taxes if they work legally, so they only get to keep 30-40k of that 50k anyway.

The smart ones don't get caught because they do their crime, collect the money, and then quit. Most people can't resist running their scam again and again until they get caught.
