Students Protest DMCA During Visit by Valenti 9

lsy writes "A group of University of Rochester students staged a protest during the university's Sesquicentennial weekend on the occasion of Jack Valenti's appearance to moderate a panel of Hollywood insiders. The students handed out pamphlets, wore DeCSS t-shirts donated by Copyleft, and demonstrated a DVD being played under linux. After the event, the group had a chance to speak with Valenti for over an hour. They've received some press from the Hollywood Insider [yahoo version], and the group's web site claims that it will have photographs online of the students with Valenti "soon"."

[...] the group's web site claims that it will have photographs online of the students with Valenti "soon"."

What the pictures won't include is the scenes afterwards with Valenti grinningly dragging a few screaming students all the way back with him to Hell.

  • It's all been censored.

    Brave new world...

  • but the DeCSS code has one purpose -- decoding encrypted DVDs said Taylor (MPAA spokesman)

Well spotted that man. That's what any DVD player does isn't it?
  • So I take it Lars is going to sue the University of Rochester for having students who wore shirts with the DeCSS source code which could be used to make illegal copies of the DVD video he released?...

    Yep

It's really nice to see that we have people reacting to the DeCSS fiasco in a positive, intelligent way. For once, instead of posting anonymously to a Slashdot forum, people are takinga action.
    HOORAY!
Now, if only the Your Rights Online section had the readership of the rest of Slashdot, an article like this might deserve a fair shake.

  • It's nice to see a protest that isn't restricted to some "Protest Zone" and doesn't seem to have provoked the police into bashing anybody's head.

My mom is not a Karma whore!
  • We now have pictures [lodestone.org] of the protest and our talk with Valenti.
