Tennessee Becomes First State To Protect Musicians, Other Artists Against AI (npr.org) 23

An anonymous reader quotes a report from NPR: Tennessee made history on Thursday, becoming the first U.S. state to sign off on legislation to protect musicians from unauthorized artificial intelligence impersonation. "Tennessee (sic) is the music capital of the world, & we're leading the nation with historic protections for TN artists & songwriters against emerging AI technology," Gov. Bill Lee announced on social media. The Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security Act, or ELVIS Act, is an updated version of the state's old right of publicity law. While the old law protected an artist's name, photograph or likeness, the new legislation includes AI-specific protections. Once the law takes effect on July 1, people will be prohibited from using AI to mimic an artist's voice without permission.

  • Besides the fact that this is probably a form of protected use when done as parody, how do they expect to enforce it when the website is hosted in like Finland or something?

    I swear, it's like these lawmakers were born yesterday and haven't realized that even having federal laws against it hasn't managed to stop piracy on the internet.

    • They will protect them from commercial sales of infringing works through major platforms. The first amendment and fair use will present some interesting arguments and will probably get grey and murky with what is a parody, what is a fair use and what is a blatant infringement. We'll probably get some new standard like how many notes you can copy before your infringing on someone else's music.

      • There I Ruined It has been doing parodies using AI and IIRC they recently ran into some copyright trouble on YouTube.

        • AI parodies have been getting Youtube slaps since the start and it's politically biased like all other content on the platform. If you make a funny deepfake degrading Trump and it will stay up forever but if you poke fun at Biden there is a time limit before they start taking it down. Then it becomes a game of continuous appeals. You might win the first few appeals with the obvious satire or parody but eventually they ignore their own policies on fair use to "save democracy" and the video is removed.

    • Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if laws are passed that are ultimately unenforceable or devoid of any sense. The act of passing the law is enough for the clueless, out of touch politicians to claim they did something about some alleged transgression for the purposes of buying the votes of the useful idiots that keep electing them.

      This is why a vast majority of politicians are completely and utterly incapable of solving problems. They can only ever respond to any challenges by passing more laws, many of whi

      Honestly, "Tennessee (sic) is the music capital of the world" got me. I would never consider listening to anything which falls under this definition of "music" and have been known to leave stores playing what they would call Music in Tennessee. And that leads us to their abuse of the term "Artist". I imagine that Elvis being the "king of country western rock" probably could count as an artist in a limited set of social circles, but so far as I know, Tennessee is not exactly a

    The quote starts off with

    "Tennessee (sic) is the music capital of the world ...."

    Why does it have the "(sic)" in it? The verb following is in the proper tense for "Tennessee" and the state name is properly spelled. So what's the problem with it?

        And number 2 on the list is Nashville, TN. So... by your own citation, yes, it is viable for the state to claim that title.

          Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and can certainly claim to be a music capital. Although I see Memphis on the list, which isn't a capital. Anyway, capitals are cities and Tennessee is a state. That's why it can't be a capital.

    hardly the music capital of the world - well okay maybe only if your amerkin - other cities have better claims to that London for one and a couple of cities in the Us also
