Germany's incoming government is throwing its weight behind a ban on the use of biometric identification technologies such as facial recognition in public places. From a report: According to their coalition deal, the Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and liberal Free Democrats (FDP) want to "exclude" biometric recognition in public spaces as well as automated state scoring systems by AI through European law. "Biometric recognition in public spaces as well as automated state scoring systems by AI are to be excluded under European law," reads the coalition agreement, presented on Wednesday.
The EU's Artificial Intelligence Act, proposed in April, creates product safety rules for "high risk" AI that is likely to cause harm to humans. It also bans certain "unacceptable" AI uses, such as social scoring and restricts the use of remote biometric identification in public places from law enforcement, unless it is to fight serious crime, such as terrorism. The AI Act's prohibitions are some of the bill's most contentious articles, and many European countries have yet to decide what they think. Germany's support of a ban could rally other countries to the same view. Belgium and Slovakia have already expressed their support.

Technology was created in order to serve people. But if you're a despot, dictator, or paranoid government then technology helps you rule over the people.

Most countries have laws against things like infectious people spreading their disease around. It's often considered assault.
So it's not quite as big a deal as you might imagine. The mandatory mechanism will probably be that you need to be vaccinated or not allowed to do stuff like visit shops or offices. Just like if you had some highly contagious virus.

All you need to take is a look into the Old Testament of the Bible as a historic document and see what kind of measures they saw fit for a pretty bad infectious disease of that time, leprosy.
The question is whether such measures are warranted for these COVID situat

And there it is. The exception.
When parents getting cranky at the local school board of a school that their kids attend is labelled "terrorism", the term has lost its meaning and governments can no longer be given carte blanche to use it as an exception to our rights.

It's daft to get hot under the collar about the mere existence of law enforcement exceptions. Assault and kidnapping have law enforcement exceptions: it's called arrest and imprisonment. Few people object to that.
But such things are reserved for only when they're actually needed. Well maybe not in America where arresting nonviolent, non resisting suspects with maximum possible force and the performative perp-walk seems to be a thing. But this is Germany.
