Twitter Sees Jump In Government Demands To Remove Content of Reporters, News Outlets (reuters.com) 17

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: Twitter saw a surge in government demands worldwide in 2020 to take down content posted by journalists and news outlets, according to data released by the social media platform. In its transparency report published on Wednesday, Twitter said verified accounts of 199 journalists and news outlets on its platform faced 361 legal demands from governments to remove content in the second half of 2020, up 26% from the first half of the year. Twitter ultimately removed five tweets from journalists and news publishers, the report said. India submitted most of the removal requests, followed by Turkey, Pakistan and Russia. India topped the list for information requests by governments in the second half of 2020, overtaking the United States for the first time, the report said.

The company said globally it received over 14,500 requests for information from July 1 to Dec. 31, and it produced some or all of the information in response to 30% of the requests. Such requests can include governments or other entities asking for the identities of people tweeting under pseudonyms. Twitter also received more than 38,500 legal demands to take down various content, down 9% from the first half of 2020, It complied with 29% of the demands. In the updated transparency report, Twitter said the number of impressions, or views of a tweet, that violated Twitter's rules accounted for less than 0.1% of the total global views in the second half of 2020, the first time the platform has released such data.

... Slashdot sees jump in demand to remove dupes.

  • The right to decide which tweets stay up belongs to Twitter alone.

    • And due to Twitter's fascistic moderation governments are moving towards making them liable for everything posted on their platform.
Which is hilarious because the manpower required to review every tweet is insane and unrealistic, so Twitter will effectively get fined until they shut down.
      Lmao, fuck fascists like Jack

TLDR: Everyone needs to follow the law of that country and they can lobby and protest to get it changed but they are not allowed to flout it because of such reasons.

First of all People need to stop parroting propaganda from retards with no understanding of even the basics of Freedom or Free market.

Twitter or any other corporation are only "allowed" to operate as per the limited & temporary rights given to them by "the people" ie a group of millions or billions of humans who have organized themselves und

      • 'voluntarily themselves restricting their own "RIGHTS"'

If I am resident in a country and am unable to leave, then I am not 'voluntarily' restricting my rights, I'm in a prison camp. 17th century political theorist Hobbes argues this in 'Leviathan', offering one's staying in the country as evidence that you agree to the terms of the 'social contract' that is supposed to exist between the residents of a state.

I meant that some humans a long time ago deciding to live together organized as a kingdom or tribe necessarily decide to restrict some of their rights as opposed to those living in a jungle not in any country / kingdom.

So in a tribe you might have to do what the tribal leader decides based on some sort of larger good. Maybe you get cleaning duty or hunting duty when in a jungle you would decide whatever you wanted to do.

          • Indeed. The difficulty comes when the 'tribal leader' transforms into a psychopathic killer; Idi Amin and Emperor (was it human flesh in the freezer?) Bokassa spring to mind. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... [wikipedia.org]

Ya and that's pretty much the default given some time !

The entire behemoth of institutions in democracies were formed for checks & balances is pretty much to take care of that issue

And it still needs some sort of independent media and alert citizens to avoid else all these institutions get hijacked pretty soon

      • ...and even creating the news headlines you want to read on the fly.

That's inaccurate; a better version would be "...and even creating on the fly the news headlines it wants you to read."

The right to decide which tweets stay up belongs to Twitter alone.

Not within the borders of countries that don't have freedom of speech laws, it doesn't. They can keep the tweets up for the rest of the world, but if a country tells Twitter to remove a tweet, they have to comply and remove that tweet from appearing within the borders of the country making the request, or risk being totally blocked. Just because Twitter's a U.S. company, doesn't mean U.S. laws apply throughout the world.

  • If Twitter doesn't like it maybe they should build their *own* internet backbone.
  • Often dupes have different TFA or at least different headlines, this one appears to have identical headline and source. Too bad there isn't some method of doing an automatic regular comparison of expressions...
