India Asks Court To Block WhatsApp's Policy Update, Says New Change Violates Laws (techcrunch.com) 9

As WhatsApp spends months to address users' concerns and confusion about its planned policy update, there is evidently one entity it hasn't had much luck making inroads with: The Government of India. From a report: The Indian government alleged on Friday that WhatsApp's planned privacy update, which goes into effect in two months, violates local laws on several counts. In a filing to the Delhi High Court, the federal government also asked the court to prevent Facebook-owned messaging app from rolling out the update in India, WhatsApp's biggest market by users.

  • Says the government that wants to spy on its citizens. Now who can cause you more damage by invading your privacy .. the government, which owns the police, jail and all that. If they donâ(TM)t like you or you are too much of an expense they can eliminate you. Or whatsapp, which owns no army and in the worst case can show you targeted ads for a banana slicer you donâ(TM)t need?

Please tell me which government doesn't want to spy on its citizens?

    • That is India, bloody democracy, that's why govt. instead of passing an order, approaching court to decide on the merits and cons. Also every country has right to spy on its citizens to protect them, India is not America, that we are spying on others citizens. If some Chinese company would be spying on American citizens, America would have made a big fuss, but yes American companies can spy and sell information about other country citizens to anyone who can pay.
  • Zuck: *buys Whatsapp*
Everyone: Well, it was good while it lasted.
Zuck: Don't worry! We will keep your data separate and secure.
Everyone: OKkkkk (trying to be optimistic but wondering if Zuck can really depart that far from his nature)
    Zuck: Just kidding!
    Everyone: Aaaand there it is.
