TikTok Misses US Deadline For Sale Without Punishment (msn.com) 36

"After months of wrangling, proposals, court rulings and a few extensions, a deadline set by the Trump Administration's Treasury Department mandated a sale for TikTok by December 4th," remembers Engadget. But that's not what happened.

"Instead, Bloomberg and Reuters report, based on anonymous sources, that the Chinese company and the US government will continue negotiations."

Bloomberg reports: While the deadline has been extended multiple times, TikTok isn't expected to receive a new one, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the decision isn't yet public... The U.S. Treasury Department told TikTok and Chinese parent company ByteDance Ltd. that they won't face a fine or other punishment for missing the deadline because the sides are still negotiating. The deal, which has been in the works for months, is close to being finished, and the administration is eager to complete it before President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20, according to one of the people.

off his phony baloney "election fraud" scheme. Now that he's lost that's the only thing he cares about and the only thing he's spending any effort on. Things like this have fallen by the wayside.

What sucks is that "things fallen by the wayside" also include the pandemic & the economy. The Republican party is actively blocking useful aid and stimulus. Even for the tiny amount they're offering they want to indemnify businesses against getting employees and customers sick with dangerous conditions first. Like working safely from home? If the GOP gets their way your company can drag you back into the office months before it's safe with no precautions and if you get sick they're blameless. And sadly it's looking like the Democrats will cave as they're unlikely to win the Senate in GA and the GOP is holding the economy hostage.

TL;DR; elections have consequences. And during a pandemic those consequences are sever illness & death.

The piece of shit Mitchell McConnell is dragging his feet on any attempts. He'll continue to do it if they lose the upcoming majority as well. He did the same thing under Obama too. Worry about the people you serve and not who the president is. https://www.azquotes.com/pictu... [azquotes.com]

      • the entire GOP. We're meant to focus on and blame McConnell so that the rest of his party can remain blameless. See here [youtu.be].

It's all a trick. McConnell refuses to bring the bills to a vote, we blame McConnell, then the rest of the GOP doesn't have to go on record opposing things their voters want and need. My political forums are full of Conservatives asking "When are we getting that check? I'm going to get evicted here soon".

  • Like desperately figuring out some way that he can stay in power after next month.

And I doubt if he cares if it is actually legal or not, I believe he will do whatever he thinks he needs to to "make" it legal.

Slashcode didn't fly. I'm relieved Slashdot remains. This site is a tribute to algorithmic structures with little to no overhead but OUR EDITORS and the server racks. Ok, enough you know __ kissing.
