Sedo Halts Demonoid Domain Name Sale Citing "Legal Issues" 32
hypnosec writes "Demonoid domain names that were put up for sale last week have been de-listed by Sedo because of 'legal issues'. Trouble for Demonoid started sometime during the last week of July when it was rendered inaccessible following DDoS attacks after which it started serving malware laden ads. About four days after these reports, Ukrainian authorities got the best of Demonoid and closed down the site entirely by raiding the hosting service provider of the site. Sedo has said that no third-party or law enforcement agency has ordered the de-listing of the domain names."

The summary probably has most of it right, but so many bits of news have come out, who knows what the whole picture is on this? Admins in Mexico, there was a raid, then there wasn't, now there was... WTF?
Demonoid was a great site... nicely browseable listings, great search capability, and a good community that kept content clean (or at least well reported malware or false positives).
I hope their UI can be resurrected by somebody else and they attract many of the members of Demonoid that made that site so go

You know the industries have teams dedicated just to scour the net for stuff like that right? If you have a user base large enough to be useful, you are already on their radar.

Demonoid is/was special, and it's a shame to see it in limbo. I haven't come across a site that's even remotely similar in content, searchability, reliability (all things considered), and community. Some great posters, and some great torrents (specifically lossless audio.)
I'd sure appreciate being in the loop re: similar sites.
Hopefully it gets sorted soon....

Heh. I'm on a tv show site too, it's pretty amazing. I'm not even going to post anonymously, cause screw that. I'm not going to say where it is, though, cause they don't really like that much.
For everything else... I just use google. :p

Exactly. There was a RAID... and then there wasn't!
Just had to say that. :)
Anyway, Demonoid has bounced back so many times in the past it just doesn't seem right to think that it might finally be gone for good. Guess we will have to just wait and see.

It appears from the whois that Demonoid's domains have been transferred to a registrar in Brazil.
That would make a certain amount of sense. The 'legal issue' is probably that Sedo didn't actually have the right to sell the domains.
However, this development does encourage the notion that Demonoid intends to come back...

I wouldn't be surprised. Sedo always gave me the impression they are a seedy operation to begin with. Rumored domain frontrunning via sister division 1&1's whois search is one of them.
I always heard Sedo was GoDaddy's way of selling off domains. Have some kinda proof about the 1and1 before I cancel my 100 domains and hosting with them?

Sedo and 1&1 are both owned by United Internet (http://www.united-internet.de) and Sedo's business practices are quite suspect..

I've always wondered about that - I mean demonoid was probably registered for a number of years (WHOIS says until 2016, but who knows).
And now a registrar can go and decide that they think they can make more money selling your domain from under you?
Especially since domains were prepaid...
