Eso writes "Salon.com has this story about the Napster trial. Somewhere between October 2nd and 6th, we might finally see the dramatic conclusion of this legal battle." Well, not really. It's just the next step.

  • judging by the /. response it seems paramount to everyone's lives. I think the fire on the issue has burnt out. Napster will lose, people will go elsewhere.

  • No one seems to care enough about this issue anymore; it's gone on the backburner just as the whole 'Carnivore' scam has.

    Napster will lose. There will be no new standards on MP3's to force licenses, etc. It will all be a no-issue and we'll go back to downloading music from newsgroups, ftp and gnutella until someone mainstream finds out about it and decides to sue.

    *yawn* What an utterly boring cycle.

  • I'd imagine that if the story was on the frontpage it would be rocketing into the hundreds by now.

    But even so this isn't really big news, just the date the trial will be held.

    It does (probably) mean that Napsters failed to get the RIAAs request for a permament injunction denied though (Reg sez it more lucidly [theregister.co.uk]).

    If the case was just about Napster then people would just ignore it and use another prog when they lost.

    But there are precedents being set, even if neither side are the good guys in this case, the end result could effect a lot of people who are (relatively).

    Have to agree, can't see them winning the case though.

  • That's not a bad thing, though.

    A devastating loss would not only serve as a catalyst in the development of filesharing technologies like Gnutella & Freenet, but it would wake people up to what will happen to the Net if they just stand by & watch.

    I'm behind Napster all the way, but it's like my man Thomas Jefferson said, "The Tree of Liberty is fertilized by the blood of Patriots and Tyrants."
  • What about Omnipod. They're only on PC, but they're just asking to be the next in line.
  • Is it going to be Freenet, Gnutella, or something totally new? Maybe someone out there has the guts to stand up for people's rights?
