itwbennett writes: It's fair to say that Stack Overflow (SO) saves developers a great deal of time and money. Just how much money SO saves, however, is up for debate. A much-discussed post on Skeptics Stack Exchange estimated the amount at $30 billion over 5 years — assuming that each page view of an answered question saves a programmer 1 hour of time; each hour of time saved equals $20 of value added. Building on this, blogger Phil Johnson looked at SO value by programming language and found that answers on SO for C#, Java, JavaScript, and PHP are saving $2.5 billion or more, Johnson found.
