@gmail.com replaces @googlemail.com in the UK

Comments Filter:
  • According to the whois information, Google owns gmail.co.uk. So why can't we use that in the UK as opposed to the .com domain?
    • I've been using "@gmail" since it started. I'm in the UK...you couldn't specifically sign up for a @gmail account, just a @googlemail account, but either domain has always worked regardless. Also, you can put the dots wherever you want on the username..if you have john.smith@gmail then you also have:

etc etc....they all alias to the same account.

Little off-topic, but if that dot thing is true, that'd be great for anti-spam measures. If you're giving your email address in a situation where you think it'll be misused, just move the dots about and setup a filter to delete anything sent to that address.
