Ukraine Arrests 51 For Selling Data of 300 Million People In US, EU (bleepingcomputer.com) 11

Ukrainian law enforcement arrested 51 suspects believed to have been selling stolen personal data on hacking forums belonging to hundreds of millions worldwide, including Ukraine, the US, and Europe. BleepingComputer reports: "As a result of the operation, about 100 databases of personal data relevant for 2020-2021 were seized," the Cyberpolice Department of the National Police of Ukraine said. "The seized databases contained information on more than 300 million citizens of Ukraine, Europe and the United States."

Following this large-scale operation, Ukrainian police also shut down one of the largest sites used to sell personal information stolen from both Ukrainians and foreigners (the site's name was not revealed in the press release). On the now shutdown illegal marketplace, suspects were selling a wide range of stolen personal data, including telephone numbers, surnames, names, addresses, and, in some cases, vehicle registration info. "A total of 117 searches were conducted in different regions of Ukraine. As a result, more than 90,000 gigabytes of information were removed."

Russia releases hackers arrested for selling personal information after seizing control of Kiev. It's assumed they'll now work for the KGB in more state-controlled efforts.

What business have the Ukrainians governing Ukraine anyway? The name says it all already, Ukraine is Russian.
    • Austin? Mr. Powers? Is that you? KGB hasn't existed for 30 f'ing years. So naturally this gets upvoted as "insightful" on Slashdot. The millenials must not be able to tell it from "inciteful."

To be completely pedantic, the only former republic of the USSR to still have a state security organisation called the KGB is Belarus. Virtucon should have said FSB, since the context was Russia, but it's not quite correct to say that the KGB no longer exists.

        • There was also a somewhat popular club called "KGB" in NYC. Maybe it even still exists. But I don't think that was what he was talking about, either.
  • I wonder if this has anything to do with a growing and desperate desire to have the rest of the world like them more. Bad news for them if this is the case. Honor between nations is strictly a fair weather affair. Oftentimes not even then.

    • I just watched "Sluga Naroda." And I never liked them more than I do now. Their President is brilliant.

The government gets upset when you have more information on the people than they do.

  • As a kid this kind of news would have excited me beyond my wildest dreams, I'd say hooray for the good guys and boooh to the bad guys, finally we are safe again!

Well...several decades have passed, and I've become older and corrupted by the reality around us.

So the old me just thinks, oh goodie - so now THEY have data over 300 Million US/EU citizens.

  • ...the imminent invasion?

Does Mr. or Mrs. Hacker have some details about Putin's "hobbies" and will soon be disappeared?

I've noticed several design suggestions in your code.
