India Bans Another 43 Chinese Apps Over Cybersecurity Concerns (techcrunch.com) 13

India is not done banning Chinese apps. The world's second largest internet market, which has banned over 175 apps with links to the neighboring nation in recent months, said on Tuesday it was banning an additional 43 such apps. From a report: Like with the previous orders, India cited cybersecurity concerns to block these apps. "This action was taken based on the inputs regarding these apps for engaging in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order," said India's IT Ministry in a statement. The ministry said it issued the order to block these apps "based on the comprehensive reports received from Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, Ministry of Home Affairs." The apps that have been banned include popular short video service Snack Video, which had surged to the top of the chart in recent months, as well as e-commerce app AliExpress, delivery app Lalamove, and shopping app Taobao Live. At this point, there doesn't appear to be any Chinese app left in the top 500 apps used in India.

  • The more society relies on such applications the more they are treated like core infrastructure and the more they are regulated like core infrastructure. I'm not saying this is good or bad, only that things will change and the Wild West days of much the internet are going away.

This is basically what the Chinese have been doing forever. India is doing what everyone else should do but won't because their ass is not yet on fire.

      • What happened to India's ass, why the fire?
        • There have been border skirmishes [wikipedia.org] in 2020 involving dozens of deaths on both side. That might be one reason for it.
        • Apart from the border skirmishes,
          1. China has annexed buffer state of Tibet
          2. Sold nuclear bomb technology to Pakistan in the west
          3. Leased half of Sri Lanka in the south
          4. Pushed Nepal in North to open border conflicts where there was none
          5. Claims bhutan in north as its province
          6. Claims mountainous state of India as part of Chinese territory as part of tibet.
          7. Has huge tarrifs and barriers on most of the services that India has to offer (India being mostly service based economy).

    • Maybe they could coal-list all apps from China, and selectively eggshell-list* them once they pass a security gauntlet. It seems like it should be possible to audit/catch apps for inappropriate or obfuscated network use in a somewhat automated manner, especially during runtime. Hell, if the country is placing restrictions on the apps, you could demand that it be done at the carrier data-plan level.
