Freenet 0.3.6 released

Sanity writes: "Freenet 0.3.6 has just been released. The developers continue to work hard to make it easier to use, as well as fixing a number of bugs. Freenet may now be accessed via your Web-browser and content is starting to appear, although more is needed. An easy-to-install Windows version is now available too. Download it here."

Does freenet need editors?

From this article [oreillynet.com], it seems a large amount of the content is of a dubious nature, eg porn, warez, divx, mp3z. Much as I applaud the freenet concept, I would hate to see it overrun by crap. From my initial impressions of it, I had assumed it would most likely be a data haven for oppressed/unavailable texts and other items, but right now the prospects aren't all that great, considering both The Matrix and Scary Movie are on it. The Matrix I can understand being archived, as it seems to have quite the geek following, but Scary Movie? A lamer attempt at knob jokes I have not seen in a long time.

Freenet does NOT need editors

If a system that automatically ranks info was nearly perfected (I know they're working on it), it may be nice to try to implement it. There should be no human ranking. It would turn into something like /. moderating. If I don't like your software, you, or the car you drive, I could censor your info on freenet if "editor's" were used. We should keep all info, even flames. A classic example would be the holocaust. Most would say that it was pure evil, but does that mean we shouldn't know as much about it as possible? What about my favorite nursery rhyme? You hated it as a child. Are you going to censor that?

p.s. Do you work for a us gov't 3-letter acronym? :)

what sort of content is available for freenet? What is there that would make me download something, install it, and check out the wonders of freenet?

When you have run Freenet, you should go to http://127.0.0.1:8081/ [127.0.0.1] in your web browser. Click on the help button. Be patient, it may take a while to retrieve stuff at first, but it will speed up as your node is integrated into the network. Leave your node running if you can so that you contribute back to the network.

Anyone can be an editor

Anyone can create a "portal" on Freenet on which they can filter content as they see fit. In many ways this is just like the WWW. One popular portal is Aardvark - look at freenet:KSK@Aardvark [127.0.0.1] (hyperlink assumes that you are running Freenet on your machine).

See, you just shot your own argument to pieces ... the Matrix is acceptable but scary movie isn't? Maybe I think they're both crap! Maybe I feel the best use for freenet would be to store copies of Penn & Teller Get Killed ...

Point being, your sense of relevance, is relevant.
