I think everyone should go out and opportunities post information about to break stuff like that "violates" the DMCA.. printing flyers.. posting them everywhere.. hehe even sticking batches of flyers next to dvd players in major stores would be a good start.
Title: Digital Rights Management - How will it effect Linux and Free Software? Date: 07/26/2002 Time: 2:30pm to 3:15pm Location: Sea Breeze I
Demonstrations will be short as I want to put the majority of that 45 minutes into talking about the implications for Linux and Free Software.
Is this a publicity stunt? Of course it is. Without publicity, without informing people through publicity, how can we fight bad laws?
Am I personally getting publicity from it? Yes. I use my notoriety to get other people to write and think about issues like misuse of DMCA. If you feel as I do about those issues, I'd hope you appreciate that someone takes the trouble to do this work.
Am I getting arrested? The people who would arrest me are probably smart enough to pick someone with worse P.R., like 2600 Magazine, to take the fall. They will probably not pick me to do so because there's too much chance that I'd win, and set a precedent against the law. Thus, publicity about bad law and informing the public are the main goal of my talk.
This is one of the greatest steps toward abolishing the DMCA. We (the slashdot community) feel the pressure of the DMCA quite a bit, while the common public is relatively uneducated to it. Hopefully this will bring more light to the issue and inform the public of the noose that's slowly being tightened around all of our necks.
i want to say thank you for standing up for what you, and a million other geeks believe in.
in the past, the MPAA nad RIAA has been able to keep the DMCA alive by selectively picking their battles -one's which they knew they could win. it is very important that an important figure stands up and basically dares the MPAA/RIAA to a battle on mutual ground. i've been thinking about this for sometime and i thought that maybe richard stallman would be the one. as much as i like richard, i am happy that you're the one to do this, as stallman isn't as level-headed as you (and can sometimes be a stubborn butthead). of course you know that the community supports you -completely and utterly. i have marched for Dmitry and you can bet i would march for you.
this is a revolution, bruce! should we make a flag?
I'd like to see a real lawer take up the DMCA in court, especially over something so trivial.
The 2600 lawyer arguing against the DMCA in court was THE DEAN OF STANFORD LAW SCHOOL [stanford.edu] Kathleen Sullivan is certainly considered a real lawyer. Not to flame, but perhaps you should know what you're talking about before speaking next time.
Sorry but when the people your defending are "hackerz" who publish a "l33t magazine", you already have 50 points against you and your working up from there. Especially when the hackers make a scene of thinking they are obviously going to win, so who cares.
Good idea, but what if it goes unnoticed (like Skylarov to the vast majority of non-geeks...)? Any good ideas on how to bring in TV & newspaper coverage (which might be seen by more of the non-geek population)?
Anything we can do to help?
