Submitted by Honken
Honken (665599) writes "The Guardian reports that "One of the world's most prominent scientific figures to be sceptical about climate change has admitted to being paid more than $1m in the past decade by major US oil and coal companies."

This somewhat contradicts that Soon in a 2003 US senate hearing said that he had "not knowingly been hired by, nor employed by, nor received grants from any organisation that had taken advocacy positions with respect to the Kyoto protocol or the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.""

  • Al Gore has interest in several companies that stand to make him rich as Croesus if the legislature ever passes carbon cap and trade legislation. Can you say "conflict of interest"? Sure. I knew you could.

If this story is news, then Gore's story is even bigger news.

And it indeed was news two years ago [guardian.co.uk]

    • This guy apparently was economical with the truth to the US Senate, and has already profited from his stand. Gore, on the other hand, is putting his money where his mouth is, and has been quite open about his investments. What's more, Gore has never claimed to do more than report the science. This guy was claiming to be an expert. He is in exactly the same position as the British scientist who claimed there were no ill effects from high sugar consumption while being secretly funded by the sugar industry, or
      • "What's more, Gore has never claimed to do more than report the science."

Yes, but as we now know, he didn't even do that. His "inconvenient truth" is a hodgepodge of half-truths, deliberately intended to spread FUD.

      • "He is in exactly the same position as the British scientist who claimed there were no ill effects from high sugar consumption while being secretly funded by the sugar industry, or the "scientists" who tried to disprove the relationship between tobacco and lung cancer while being funded by the tobacco industry - who knew all the time that the link existed."

I don't dispute any of that. The only problem I have here is that you seem to think that Al Gore is not. The fact that he's been open about SOME of his investments doesn't let him off the hood for conflict of interest.

Just one example. [youtube.com] (BTW, I agree with Jesse Ventura that Al Gore might not be out to "control the world"... but profit from climate hysteria he helped to cause? Hell, yes.)
