PatPending writes "FTFA: The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak. ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags. The sites are replaced with a note from the government: "This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations.""

Morton, the assistant secretary of ICE, and representatives of the Motion Picture Association of America called it a long-term effort against online piracy, and said that suspected criminals would be pursued anywhere in the world. “American business is under assault from counterfeiters and pirates every day, seven days a week,” Mr. Morton said. “Criminals are stealing American ideas and products and distributing them over the Internet.”

    Given that

  • Most of these sites that are seized are selling counterfeit goods. Counterfeit goods don't represent a threat to national security, only a threat to the bottom line of American businesses. So, why are the DHS and ICE so concerned with the wellbeing of businesses, instead of building that fence that people have been whining about, or actually securing the homeland?
