An anonymous reader writes "The FBI has released images of what they say are two suspects with backpacks and ball caps. 'Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members of the suspects,' Special Agent Rick DesLauriers, the head of the FBI's Boston office said. 'And though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us.'"

For clarity, these images should be the only ones—the only ones—that the public should view to assist us. Other photos should not be deemed credible and unnecessarily divert the public’s attention in the wrong direction and create undue work for vital law enforcement resources.
Though that appears to be the same person, please identify based upon the photos released by the FBI.

Nope, Mr tan pants next to pink girl in that photo has a white hat with burgundy front and a dark? shirt. The suspect from the the video has a fully dark hat and a white shirt. Also the photo guy has a red coat, and video guy's coat doesn't look red.

Since you had the courage to post with your account, I decided not to down-mod you, but ask you a counter-question: How?
Many countries have problems with selective interpretations of religion (including Christianity - abortion clinics, for example). How would you prevent such behavior? By outlawing a religion (Won't help - you don't declare your religion upon entry into the US)? How about ethnic cleansing (huge collateral damage)?
And if you resort to such techniques, what does it say about the robustness of your country's ideals? If you drop them at the first sign of trouble, are they really worth preserving? India (the world's largest democracy) has had attacks for decades (citation [wikipedia.org]). And they haven't spent years interfering in the Middle East. So if you have a workable solution, I'd love to hear it.

Respectfully, I think they had the wrong type of education.
I don't care how awesome an engineer you are, if you have never taken and understood a philosophy course or an ethics course, you have probably never seriously and critically examined the things you were brought up to believe, or tried to follow the reasoning of someone else's beliefs.
Hell, even a proper, proof based, mathematics course will have you identifying logical inconsistencies in various lines of reasoning by the time you take your mid-term. Other good choices are history, psychology and anthropology. Oh and definitely, absolutely, a first year literature course, where you have to learn to think critically about what you see, hear and read, then form a supported opinion, and then express it coherently, to other smart people.
Not to say that there aren't people out there that can instinctively and naturally think in both a rigorous and a compassionate manner (and I am definitely not trying to imply anything personal, Sir), but if you've ever read English papers written by first year engineers, you can probably see where I'm coming from. Most people need to be taught these kinds of things, if only to jump start their own awareness of just how diverse and wonderful the wider world really is. It's called "The Big Picture" for good reason.

Watch something like Lawrence of Arabia to be reminded of how little unity there is in reality between Islamic nations. Flame-bait: There is no evidence at this time to back up his hypothesis that it was Islamic fundamentalists. Also, he used a phrase "If the world can't keep Islam and all the Islamic violence out, at least USA can try" - which would seem to imply that he has a problem with the religion and the violence, without differentiating the two (and which planet would he have them relocate to?).

Not that I'm condoning any violence but when a bunch of Saudis brought down your towers you did use it to justify killing a lot more than 3000 innocent Muslims... Look at it from another perspective. You're a huge and powerful country that thought you were completely justified to kill a bunch of innocents. Why would a hurting and disillusioned Muslim feel bad about taking the hurt to you? It's nice you found links that aren't directly from Glenn Beck but the story line you are propagating is directly from Mr. Conspiracy himself. He's tried to turn every single rumor about this into an attack on Obama, in this case being that the kid is actually involved but connected and so Obama is trying to sneak him out of the country. He doesn't need facts on his side, he relies on innuendo and people like you to propagate the falsehoods. Did you realize you just became a willing participant in a propaganda campaign by a crazy Mormon?
As the other poster said there could be a million reasons to deport him, including that when they searched his apartment they found cannabis or even that his parents asked him to come home so he doesn't get hurt by vigilantes. Who cares? What the GP is doing is counter-productive and even harmful to a high profile terrorism investigation. Are we really going to sit here and nitpick about what the "system was designed for" ?!

Because everybody in the country knows about it by now. There's a finite number of people who can potentially and legitimately help the case, and a whole big, giant, seething ball of useless people who only think they're helpful but in reality are only making things worse. The people who can help know who they are, and hopefully by now have contacted the FBI... and not posted to their Facebook where it does almost no good.
The internet is a great tool, and as an IT professional I know this better than most. But I also know that the average person is a dumb, stupid animal, and if they get the idea that they can be a hero into their head, they may wind up getting themselves or someone else killed.
This is something the professionals need to handle, not people like you and me. People like you and me need to just sit back, watch the news, and let them do their job. I know how I feel whenever someone screws up a computer or piece of software because they thought they knew what they were doing -- it's a big reason why I get paid so much money. Right now, if I were working on this case, the one thing I'd want from someone like me, is to stay out of the way, and not make it worse.

There are cheap cameras today that do full HD, low artifacts, and run 30 frames a second. These images were from old equipment and software. The smudged faces is that. They should be replaced. All replaced. The city I live has less than one FPS on its non-traffic cameras. It's pathetic what salesman push on the HLS-cash-infused cities when cheaper, and much better, hardware and software is available right now. You get what you pay for, and sometimes, not even that.

I'm surprised they couldn't clean up the images more. Clearly you can't do much with a single image since there's only so much information, but with a video you're getting a slightly different set of information with each frame, I always figured you could do a mapping/averaging of all the different shots and extract something a little cleaner. Unfortunately it looks like that's not the case (or at least it doesn't work well here).

No need for that. The police just has to call the crime lab at CSI Miami or Chloe down at the CTU. If all the moles have been properly smoked out from those organizations it should be possible to get 3D pictures of both suspects.

These look like local business security cams -- who is going to pay the businesses to replace the cameras and DVR's every year to keep up with the latest and greatest technology? To be fair to them, they aren't trained law enforcement officers with many years of experience identifying suspects. They shouldn't have been picking anyone out; They should have been submitting their photos, videos, and eyewitness accounts directly to the FBI instead of engaging in vigilantism.

The government posts "most wanted" pictures for heinous crimes quite often, usually without dire consequences for either the perpetrator, or idiot members of the public getting themselves killed trying to nab violent psychopaths. I suspect these two have already gone into hiding --- they won't be obvious to the general public. But who they were and where they lived before the crime will be discovered really fast. However, I can see this type of situation getting messier in the future --- suppose the "unofficial crowd sourced intelligence gathering" had identified "suspects" on public message boards within 30 minutes of the incident (which I don't see as out-of-the-question for future incidents); then things could get awfully rough for any vague look-alikes in the area.

One of the suspects was wearing his hat backwards in the video. Now really if you are wearing a hat to hide your face from security cams that is about as dumb a thing as you can do.

I'm surprised that the doubting Thomases are getting so many mod points around here today. There is no better facial recognition system in the world than the human brain. The pictures are worthlessly low-res and indiscriminate? Someone who knows these individuals will correlate the physical details of the face, the expression, the height, haircut, posture, and clothing instantly and unconsciously. They will be recognized. Those acquaintances can see the forest. All we are getting is trees.
And to cover the other criticism of why these two were chosen... Both were seen walking together with black backpacks. Then each one was seen individually right at one of the two bomb sites. In the case of suspect #2, there is video of him putting his backpack down and then walking away from it. Personally I agree that this is sufficient to refer to both individuals as "suspects."

One is dead, having used a suicide vest, and the other (supect #2, white hat) is still being hunted by over 9000 cops. That's not a lame joke. That's the actual number of cops on the scene.

There were at least 4 Craft guys. They had radiation detectors on site and were caught on camera using them after the explosion. They were private contractors, not official government agents. All 4 Craft guys are well known to the FBI and were acting on behalf of the organizers of the event. This is something they do frequently.

Yes, but please for the love of $deity don't let them program search databases. I cringe every time when they do a fingerprint or photo match on CSI. Instead of looking for the file, it painstakingly takes every picture from the database, displays it, finds out that it doesn't match... rinse repeat.
Seriously, it is quite hard to take shows serious when they do junk like that. But then again, like a friend of mine (who actually DOES that kind of work over here) said "they wouldn't even greenlight the expense
