  3 Skypephone S2 Review[->] 2008-11-19 04:03 irgnet

Cellphones
irgnet writes "Five years ago, a software called Skype made waves in the online community. The aim of Skype is to allow users to make telephone calls over the Internet. This was patronized by a lot of individuals around the world, because calls to other Skype users will be free. However, calls to other mobile phones or landlines will be billed with a minimal charge. Because of the popularity of the software, Skype has decided to come up with its very own mobile phone."

As she was cleaning the bag and wiping the tools and equipment inside, the bag floated away. Another bag carrying identical equipment is now being shared by Piper and Bowen." Luckily they had a spare. Apparently astronauts are not different from your average plumber in this sense."

  Science: Oldest Nuclear Family Found Murdered In Germany 2008-11-19 03:16

Posted by kdawson on Wednesday November 19, @03:16AM
from the calling-csi-stone-age dept.
Biotech
Pickens writes "The oldest genetically identifiable nuclear family met a violent death, according to analysis of remains from 4,600-year-old burials in Germany where the broken bones of these stone age people show they were killed in a struggle. Comparisons of DNA from one grave confirm it contained a mother, father, and their two children. 'We're really sure, based on hard biological facts not just supposing or assuming,' says Dr. Wolfgang Haak, from The Australian Centre for Ancient DNA. The stone-age people are thought to belong to a group known as the Corded Ware Culture, signified by their pots decorated with impressions from twisted cords. The children and adult males had the same type of strontium in their teeth — which was also found locally, but the nearest match to the women's teeth was at least 50km away, suggesting they had moved to the area. 'They were definitely murdered, there are big holes in their heads, fingers and wrists are broken,' says Dr. Alistair Pike from Bristol University. He noted that one victim even had the tip of a stone weapon embedded in a vertebra. 'You feel some kind of sympathy for them, it's a human thing, somebody must have really cared for them. ... We don't know how hard daily life was back there and if there was any space for love,' added Dr. Haak."

Do people who work at the local McDonalds get paid for preparing the restaurant to open at the beginning of each business day and for closing up shop at the end? I sure hope so.

This is the exact same situation. If the employers don't like it, they can pay someone to set up a script to automatically boot the computer half an hour before the start of the business day. I'm sure they can justify the cost once the cost is actually there.

  Wall street mess[->] 2008-11-19 02:45

Submitted by on Wednesday November 19, @02:45AM
United States
An anonymous reader writes "The era that defined Wall Street is finally, officially over. Michael Lewis, who chronicled its excess in Liar's Poker, returns to his old haunt to figure out what went wrong. The guys throws light on the inner workings of the crisis, and how some people made money of it. Quoting:

"I thought I was writing a period piece about the 1980s in America. Not for a moment did I suspect that the financial 1980s would last two full decades longer or that the difference in degree between Wall Street and ordinary life would swell into a difference in kind. I expected readers of the future to be outraged that back in 1986, the C.E.O. of Salomon Brothers, John Gutfreund, was paid $3.1 million; I expected them to gape in horror when I reported that one of our traders, Howie Rubin, had moved to Merrill Lynch, where he lost $250 million; I assumed they'd be shocked to learn that a Wall Street C.E.O. had only the vaguest idea of the risks his traders were running. What I didn't expect was that any future reader would look on my experience and say, "How quaint."""

  Toyota Backs Away From DesktopNexus 2008-11-19 02:26 Khyber

Submitted by Khyber on Wednesday November 19, @02:26AM
Censorship
Khyber writes "Slashdot recently covered the ongoing potential litigation against DesktopNexus, which included the demand that all images containing a Toyota, Scion, or Lexus were to be taken offline. Being an owner of one of those images, I immediately fired a very sternly-worded email (with help from a lawyer.) Toyota has capitulated, as noted here in their response to me:

"Thank you for contacting Toyota with your comments and concerns regarding the use of vehicle images. The letter asking the DesktopNexus site to remove all images featuring a Toyota, Scion or Lexus vehicle was the result of miscommunication at Toyota, which we regret.

Copyright law protects the creative work product of artists, photographers, and other creators. Toyota respects these rights, including those of photographers who work with Toyota. Toyota purchases the rights to the images it posts on its sites, and welcomes public use of those images where we have the rights to give. However, this permission is limited to editorial or personal use, not commercial use, such as advertising any products or services. That's because the photographers — not Toyota — retain the rights to any commercial use, and we cannot give permission to use those images for that purpose. In response the concerns raised by DesktopNexus, Toyota is working with photographers to determine what images may be used for noncommercial purposes, and what we can do to provide broader access. We hope you will understand and appreciate the legal constraints we face.

Toyota also welcomes interested members of the public to use their own images or photography of Toyota's vehicles, and we confirm that we have no objection to this use.""

When I worked for a chain coffee joint, We arrived to our shift, punched in, and we were paid. If we opened, we got there at 4:30am and started getting paid, even though we opened at 5 and the first 10 or 15 mins of the shift involved dumping hot water out of urns and staring in to space trying to figure out where we were and why the clock had such a low number on it. Closing, we kicked everyone out at 11, and locked the doors. Then we cleaned until 11:45 when we stopped getting paid. If anything was left to be done, we left a note, and went home.

This ought to be pretty typical even ( especially ) of shitty low-wage jobs. Now I work salary so I roll in when I feel like it, go home when I feel like it, if I feel like working a 4 day x 9 hour week I can, and so long as my assigned tasks get done I continue to get paid.

If your situation resembles neither of these either you're on the dole, or you're getting screwed by your employer and should file a complaint or unionize.

Don't let your boss fuck you, that's anti-capitalist. Fuck back.

  Compete with us? How about we just bought you? 2008-11-19 02:12 sealfoss

Submitted by sealfoss on Wednesday November 19, @02:12AM

sealfoss writes "Autodesk, architectural and design software super-developer, has acquired Softimage, parent company of the famed 3D modeling software XSI. This comes as a bit of a shocker, considering that, when it came to media and entertainment purposes in 3D animation, XSI was pretty much the best (and sometimes) only professional alternative to the Autodesk brand. However, rather than just liquidating Softimage, Autodesk is promising to continue the XSI software line. These claims probably do have substance to them, considering Autodesk did the same thing with Alias back in 2005, and Autodesk Maya 2009 was just released last month (something many people are infinitely thankful for, myself included). By recognizing the advantages found in different solutions to the same problems, is Autodesk keeping the spirit of competition alive, all while buying up the majority of their competition?"
